Autonomy: 1. the capacity for self-governance, i.e. the ability to make reasonable decisions. 2. A moral principle barring interference with autonomous decision-making. (NIEH gloss)
AUTONOMY; the right of individuals to exercise freewill in making informed choices of care. (Woncadic)
Decision-making capacity (DMC): the ability to make sound decisions. DMC is often situational and comes in degrees: for example, a person may be able to order food from a menu but not be able to make a decision concerning complex medical treatment. Factors that can compromise DMC include mental illness or disability, extreme emotional stress, drugs, age, or serious physical illness. DMC is not the same as legal competence: a demented adult may be legally competent but lack DMC.(NIEHS)
Dependency (Psychology) ; The tendency of an individual or individuals to rely on others for advice, guidance, or support.(MeSH)
Patient Empowerment ; is an educational process to help or support the patient to develop knowledge, skills, attitudes and self-awareness, and to assume effective responsibility for health-related decisions. (E. Mola, EJGP 2008) (Woncabook)
Patient Freedom of Choice Laws ; Laws requiring patients under managed care programs to receive services from the physician or other provider of their choice. Any willing provider laws take many different forms, but they typically prohibit managed-care organizations from having a closed panel of physicians, hospitals, or other providers.(MeSH)
